KaiSemi Replaces End-of-Life ASICs and FPGAs with Functionally Identical Chips

KaiSemi Ltd. has launched a service that replaces end-of-life ASICs and FPGAs with functionally identical chips, by automatically converting the old components into functionally identical ASIC devices

Netanya, Israel, August 2011

Fabless semiconductor vendor KaiSemi Ltd. is boosting its efforts to provide drop-in replacement chips for ASICs and FPGAs whose manufacturing is due to be terminated (End-of-Life).

KaiSemi’s End-of-Life solution is available immediately worldwide. It is based on KaiSemi’s proprietary conversion technology, which is able to automatically convert any FPGA or ASIC chip into a functionally identical ASIC device. KaiSemi receives the customer’s netlist and converts it quickly and automatically into a functionally identical ASIC netlist. KaiSemi eventually proceeds to tape out, manages the entire manufacturing and shipping processes and provides the customer with a functionally identical, drop-in ASIC replacement chip, within up to 20 weeks.

KaiSemi's technical breakthrough is an automated conversion tool and process which were developed by a team whose track record includes more than 500 successful conversions. The unique in-house tool performs an automated conversion directly from the original netlist into a functionally-identical ASIC gate-level netlist, using a large preinstalled embedded database of various fab processes and libraries. The technology enabled KaiSemi to approach companies in America, Europe and Asia with a risk-free full turnkey ASIC solution, which requires no engineering resources on behalf of the customer ("Zero NRE").

"As process geometries become smaller, and the lifecycles of products and technologies become shorter, more hardware companies face end-of-life problems”, said Tomer Kabakov, VP Sales and Marketing at KaiSemi. “This is where we can provide KaiSemi’s support. We are able to supply a pin-to-pin, functionally identical ASIC chip, based on the netlist of the obsolete component. The KaiSemi flow is automatic and transparent to the customer”.

KaiSemi Will Showcase its "Zero NRE" Automated FPGA-to-ASIC Replacement at ESC Silicon Valley

Netanya, Israel, March, 2011

KaiSemi Ltd., a fabless semiconductor vendor, announced that it will exhibit at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) Silicon Valley 2011, being held May 3-5 at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California.

KaiSemi is set to showcase an innovative IP synthesis tool that automatically converts any FPGA netlist directly to ASIC netlist with the push of a button.  Based on its unique tool, KaiSemi provides reduced cost ASIC chips, acting as a second-source to any existing FPGA chip, while ensuring identical design functionality dedicated per customer. Backed by a tier-one fab vendor, KaiSemi's automated conversion and flow eliminates the need for customer involvement and resources, NRE costs, long lead times, and the risks that are part of traditional FPGA-to-ASIC conversion flows. KaiSemi's automated conversion is combined with complete in-house ASIC flow, fab manufacturing and handling of customer orders and shipments. The customer receives a replacement ASIC unit price, amortized with NRE that is typically less than half the FPGA unit price.

In addition to its FPGA-to-ASIC solution, KaiSemi will exhibit its conversion-based replacement solutions in the areas of DSP-Algorithm-to-ASIC, end-of-life / ASIC-to-ASIC and FPGA-to-FPGA.

Since their official launch at Electronica 2010 in Munich, Germany, the interest in KaiSemi's solutions encouraged the company to establish a network of distributors in America, Europe, Asia and New Zealand.

KaiSemi's automated FPGA-to-ASIC tool minimizes silicon area costs and selects the most optimized standard-cell fab processes from an embedded database of multiple standard-cell fab process libraries. The company's proprietary technology reduces customer design cost, unit cost and required minimum quantity breakeven point. It achieves a fast ASIC cycle time through a seamless process that does not involve the customers' designers, does not require source code (RTL) modification and therefore guarantees functionality.

"Compared to ASICs, FPGAs involve much higher unit costs and much lower upfront costs," said Tomer Kabakov, VP Sales and Marketing at KaiSemi. "While some companies use FPGA as a final product, others invest in a traditional ASIC flow that starts from scratch. KaiSemi's seamless automated FPGA to ASIC replacement does not involve customer resources and is appropriate for both types of customers. No competitors use the same technology."

Attendees at ESC Silicon Valley 2011 will be able to visit KaiSemi at booth # 1747.

KaiSemi Offers FPGA-to-ASIC Replacement with a "Zero NRE" Model and a Functional Guarantee

Netanya, Israel, September 16th, 2010

A breakthrough in automated FPGA-to-ASIC conversion allows fabless semiconductor company KaiSemi to provide customers with a seamless full turnkey ASIC solution, selling fully compatible replacement chips.

KaiSemi's proven process uses a unique in-house tool, which performs an automated conversion directly from the original FPGA netlist into a functionally-identical ASIC gate-level netlist.

Backed by a tier-one fab vendor, KaiSemi's automated conversion utilizes a database of multiple proven standard-cell fab process libraries and standard cores. The wide range of libraries enables the conversion of any type and size of FPGA from any FPGA vendor while providing deep cost optimization during the automated conversion. The resulting ASICs – which are pin-compatible, timing-compatible, and functionally identical to the original FPGAs – consume less power and cost up to 70% less than their FPGA counterparts.

KaiSemi's automated conversion and flow eliminates the need for customer involvement and resources, NRE costs, long lead times, and the risks that are part of traditional FPGA-to-ASIC conversion flows. KaiSemi manages the whole FPGA-to-ASIC process for the customer, from the purchase order through conversion, the ASIC flow, manufacturing, all the way through to the shipment of the ASIC chips. This seamless conversion process – combined with the Zero NRE model – lets the customer order an ASIC chip as if it were an off-the-shelf second-source replacement chip with a relatively short lead-time.

"KaiSemi is focused on automating the process of converting any FPGA into an ASIC replacement chip while achieving the best cost solution in terms of price, power, area optimization, and the most appropriate fab process," said Gal Gilat, KaiSemi CEO. "Using a proven automated conversion tool with no RTL touch means we can offer a fully functional guarantee; we will provide a functionally-identical chip at a dramatically lower price within a significantly shorter lead time."
